Inpatient Chronic Pain Treatment Program --> Program Services

The suffering from chronic pain, often accompanied by co-occuring dependence on prescription medication, is part of a vicious circle that inevitably affects a person on every level. LVRC's Inpatient Chronic Pain Recovery Treatment Program involves rebuilding the “whole self” according to "The Four Points of Balance" which involves balancing the individual:

  1. Physically
  2. Mentally
  3. Emotionally
  4. Spiritually

The Pain Recovery Program typically begins with medically managed withdrawal and detoxification from any habit-forming substances. After withdrawal and detox, the individual then enters into up to four weeks of structured curriculum tailored to each individual's needs and medical requirements. Services will individual and group counseling, educational and process groups, attendance at twelve-step and pain recovery support groups, family sessions and a variety of enhanced medical and holistic services. Goals for these healing practices include long-term health benefits and an enhanced overall sense of well-being, and all of them are geared towards the goal of learning to live and enjoy life in the presence of chronic pain without the use of habit-forming substances.

PHYSICAL SERVICES

Modality/Service How Often?

Chiropractic treatment - Chiropractic is a discipline that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, as these disorders can affect general health via the nervous system. While the short-term goal of Chiropractic care typically is to reduce and eliminate pain, the long-term goal is to correct and remove the cause of one or more deeper issue(s).

The actual goal of Chiropractic Treatment at LVRC is to ensure the body is functioning as effectively and efficiently as possible no matter what the ailment. The benefits of Chiropractic care affect the whole body, because Chiropractic focuses on the entire body, not just the areas that hurt.

Three times per week. Includes Functional assessment with chiropractor on admission and discharge

Physical therapy

Three times per week for a total of eight sessions. Physical Therapy begins after ten days in Chronic Pain Recovery Program and can include Pilates . Physical Therapy includes an initial evaluation and re-evaluation.

Therapeutic massage - Massage is the systematic, manual application of pressure and movement to the soft tissue of the body―the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (the membrane surrounding muscles and muscle groups). It is believed to encourage healing by promoting the flow of blood and lymphatic fluid, relieving tension, stimulating nerves, and stretching and loosening muscles and connective tissues to keep them elastic. Massage can stimulate or calm the nervous system, depending upon what is required by the individual, and thus helps to reduce fatigue, leaving the receiver with a feeling of replenished energy. At its best, massage has the potential to restore an individual physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Susan Rocchio, LVRC's resident Massage Therapist, explains in her own words: “I became interested in Massage Therapy as a healing art when my sister was killed in a car accident in the early 80s. My family was traumatized and in such grief, I knew instinctively that touch could help. I remember my mother saying, “Your hands are taking away my stress,” and I learned later how true this can be.

I believe Massage Therapy is a vital and integral part in physical, emotional, and spiritual health and has been shown to increase body awareness and general well-being on many levels. The benefits of massage are many and unique to each individual. Many find that massage acts like a “cleanser,” pushing along lymphatic fluids and hastening the elimination of wastes and toxic debris. Often the opportunity to create balance in mind, body, and spirit is available through the peace that comes with quieting the mind as the body deeply relaxes.

I have studied massage and body work since 1993, incorporating Deep Tissue, Cranio-Sacral, and Healing Touch modalities into my practice―I have found these offer the most inspirational transformation to the client. Massage Therapy has the potential to greatly assist on the journey of self-care, health, and wellness.”

Acupuncture - Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice that applies small, fine-pointed needles to specific points along the body's meridian system in order to dislodge blockages and increase the overall flow of energy throughout the body. Acupuncture at LVRC is offered by Dr. Jordan, who has had a private practice specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the past twelve years both in Florida and in Nevada. She is a Diplomate in Acupuncture and in Chinese Herbology from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She is also an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist trained by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA). Prior to starting her acupuncture practice, Dr. Jordan had a private practice as a psychologist in the state of Florida for more than twenty years.

Chi Kung - Chi Kung literally means “Energy Exercise” and it is practiced as an ancient Chinese healthcare system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques, and focused attention. Chi Kung creates an awareness of, and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. Most exercises do not involve the meridian system (used in acupuncture), nor do they emphasize the importance of adding mind intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. When these dimensions are added, the benefits of exercise increase markedly.

The gentle rhythmic movements of Chi Kung reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, and digestive functions. Consistent practice helps one regain a youthful vitality, maintain health into old age, and helps speed recovery from illness. One of the more important long-term effects is that Chi Kung reestablishes the body/mind/spirit connection.

Here at LVRC, we use the “Eight-Section Brocade” Chi Kung exercises to assist clients in their efforts to balance their bodies, calm their minds, and above all, reconnect with their spirits. When these aspects of one's being are integrated, it encourages a positive outlook on life and helps eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It also creates a more balanced lifestyle, bringing greater harmony, stability, and enjoyment to one's life.

Chi Kung's great appeal is that everyone can benefit, regardless of ability, age, belief system, or life circumstance.

Yoga - The practice of yogic postures (asanas), breathing, and meditation can help an individual get a clear sense of self. The basis of the practice is love, oneness, and living in the present moment. The goal of yoga is to create peaceful union among the body, mind, and spirit.

Yoga offers a gentle and peaceful way for people suffering with chronic pain to reconnect with their bodies. The positive physical effects of yoga are both immediate and long-term. Yogic stretches, bends, and breathing methods can bring an immediate sense of calm and focus. These simple techniques can provide immense relief from racing or impulsive thoughts, as well as tension, fear, anger, frustration, and anxiety. Longer-term effects of yoga, such as increased bone and muscle strength, increased flexibility and stamina, improved circulation, and better coordination can help people with chronic pain regain some of their lost function, physical health and to develop a more positive self-image.

Group weekly

Reiki - Reiki is a Japanese energy technique that works to clear and balance the chakras, the aura, and the meridians. “Rei” means “universally guided” and “Ki” means “energy.”

Reiki is a noninvasive modality where the client remains fully clothed during treatment. The Reiki practitioner will lay his or her hands on, or hover with both hands a few inches above the areas of the body that align with the chakras. Chakras are spinning energy centers in the body that lie along the body's many energetic pathways. The practitioner may also be guided to work other areas of the body where there may be blockages. It is a subtle, yet powerful modality.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not associated with any particular religion, and as such it is available to everyone. Reiki can aid in stress reduction and relaxation, which are key components in alleviating chronic pain. Reiki can also ease addiction-based illnesses, anxiety, and depression. It can aid in insomnia relief, increase inner peace and mental clarity, and boost creativity. LVRC provides a safe environment for clients' Reiki experience.

Nutrition Consultation - Appropriate nutrition can help manage weight, increase energy, and maintain a way of life free of substance-dependency. Nutritional information can often be confusing, making it difficult to know what is the right balance of nutrients to consume in order to feel healthy and energetic and prevent lifestyle diseases. It is well documented that appropriate nutrition can help manage weight, increase energy, prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and maintain a substance-dependency free lifestyle. At Las Vegas Recovery Center, we provide clients with information, offer guidance so that they can make food choices to complement their new found recovery, and tailor nutritional plans to meet their individual needs. The nutritional consultation includes a review of the client's medical history and nutritional history, and development of a menu system specific to each client.
